Maibowlenfescht - that was the name of the Stedtlifest over 50 years ago. This year's anniversary event was organised by an organising committee in collaboration with the tourist office, associated clubs and the schools of Nidau. In 1980, it was renamed the Stedtlifest and has since developed into a major festival that attracts many showmen, market traders and visitors from near and far.

However, the actual origins of the Stedtlifest date back to 1935, when around 10,000 to 15,000 visitors attended the first version of the Maisonntag in Nidau's Stedtli. This was intended as a counterpart to the Reading Sundays on the other side of the lake and was intended to publicise and revitalise the Stedtli.
