Kudzanai-Violet Hwami’s (*1993, Zimbabwe) large-scale paintings combine visual fragments from a multiplicity of sources, such as online and archival images, as well as personal photographs, thereby collapsing past and present. Her collaged and layered compositions free the figure from the often-prescribed meanings of their original context to create new narratives. In these, Hwami boldly raises questions about human experience in relation to the investigation of sexual, spiritual or political identity.
